MMA icon Sakuraba set for pro wrestling return

Mixed martial arts icon Kazushi Sakuraba will return to pro wrestling after a seven-month hiatus.

UFC Hall of Famer Sakuraba, 54, who has wrestled part-time as a freelancer for Pro Wrestling NOAH since 2019, returns for the company’s ‘Limit Break’ event at Korakuen Hall on 15 February.

Sakuraba will lock horns with Big Japan Pro Wrestling’s bruising heavyweight Daisuke Sekimoto for the first time.

“Sekimoto-san, you are a crazy power fighter,” Sakuraba posted on X.

Since retiring from MMA in 2015 after a loss to Shinya Aoki, the Gracie Hunter has been championing and competing in Japan-based QUINTET, one of the world’s leading submission grappling promotions.

The IQ Wrestler is a producer for QUINTET which held its comeback and first post-pandemic event in September. Sakuraba was in action and went to a time limit draw with American PJ Barch of Team 10th Planet as part of a team match-up.

NOAH’s Limit Break event will air LIVE on the company’s streaming platform Wrestle Universe.
